On December 1st, at Kashima Jingu Shrine (Kashima Noriyoshi) in Kyuchu, Kashima City, Ibaraki Prefecture, the customary "Susuharai" Shinto ritual was held. They carefully cleaned the dirt of the year.
Susuharai is a traditional event that has been held since ancient times, and was once called "Osusu Oroshi". The four priests and miko who received the purgatory form a horizontal line in front of the tower gate (approximately 13 meters high) and use a 4-meter-long "ossu bamboo" with feathers of wild birds attached. and brushed away the soot and dust. Hirofumi Yoshida, a green onion, said, "The dust has been wiped off. We are also very refreshed."
In preparation for welcoming the New Year, the shrine is also making lucky charms such as hamaya. On this day, Shinto priests and shrine maidens were busy attaching votive plaques with the "u" of next year's Eto to Hamaya. It is said that about 15,000 Hamaya will be prepared.
